I was wondering if y'all could post your most favorite and least favorite veneer to work with?
And maybe alittle explanation as to why.
I think this would help the new people to veneer and also be informative to those who always want to learn something new.

Thanks

Hi Tex,

good question!

my favorites
macassar ebony
crotch mahogany
lacewood
pommele sapele
makore
wenge

least favorite
maple
oak
bamboo

these un favorite veneers have more to do with design rather than workability.bamboo is like working with a porcupine.

favorites like mac ebony have to do with design and finish they produce. crotch mahogany is hard to prep but is still the king of the woods. the combo of crotch and satinwood is a classic look.

if prefer the off beat as opposed to the mundane . 25 years ago i couldn't give mac ebony away, now ... i cant keep it around. most flitches are gone before it's delivered.

I bought this flitch oddly enough from a chinese supplier. I started to market it long before it arrived. 90% was sold before it ever hit USA soil.

The design criteria has changed with not only my residential customers but with the architectural industry as well.
